"Stepping Out In Faith"

Genesis 24: 42 – 49, 58 - 67 (Sermon)

the God of my master, Abraham. But now He was my God also.

Next I met Rebekah’s brother Laban. I will be honest with you I did not trust Laban because he seemed too impressed with the gold jewelry I had given to Rebekah. However, brother Laban did recognize the leading of Almighty God and Laban did lead me to their father’s house.

Since I was Abraham’s trusted servant Laban and his father Bethuel threw a huge banquet for me. But I told them I would not eat until I had told them why I had come. You see, the job my master gave me was much more important than my personal pleasure. After all, I am my master’s servant. After

I told them my story they asked Rebekah if she wanted to go to the land of Canaan and marry Isaac. Without any hesitation she said, "I will go." So in the morning I packed up the camels for the long journey back to Canaan and left.

I do not want you to miss the faith of Rebekah. She had just met me and she immediately agreed to make a long journey with a stranger into a foreign land to marry a man she had never seen. I have thought about this a lot, and the only way she would have agreed to this was for her to see the hand of God at work around her and for her to hear the voice of God leading her. Now that is real faith.

I was very impressed with the blessing Rebekah’s father gave before we left. "May you be the mother of thousands of millions and may your children rule over their enemies." Rebekah’s father believed God’s promise to my master, Abraham.

It was a long hard trip home. As we were bouncing up and down on the camels, Rebekah kept asking me to tell her all about Isaac.

At last we got home. When Rebekah saw Isaac she jumped down off of her camel and ran to Isaac. Isaac loved Rebekah and Rebekah comforted Isaac.

Now I am sure you are wondering why I told you my story – a story that happened over 4,000 years ago. I told you my story because you and I have a lot in common. You see, my story is a picture of the Church. You are a servant also. We both have a master, and our master has given each one of us a job to do. One of the figures of speech used in the New Testament is that the Church is the bride of Christ. Our master has asked each one of us to go and invite people to be with Him. In our lesson from Matthew we read that we are to go out into the world and tell people what great things the Lord has done for us. We are to tell them about the wonders of our Father’s house; we are to tell them the great things He has prepared for those who accept His invitation. So the first question I must ask you is, "Have you accepted the fact that you are God’s servant" "Are you going to do the job that your master has given to you to do? Are you going to invite your friends to come to Christ?"

I do not want to miss the significance of what my master Abraham said to me (verse 8). "If the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from your oath." This takes on real significance when we believe in the providence and sovereignty of Almighty God - if we truly believe that God leads and God calls people to Himself. Your job is not to make people respond … your job is simply to invite people to come.

If you learn anything from my story it should be the leading of the Lord in all of the lives of the people who trust Him. If God could lead me, Rebekah, and Laban He can lead you in your daily life today.

I learned that God loves each one of us and God wants each of us to respond to His love. I saw that so clearly when Rebekah responded to Isaac … "Isaac was comforted by Rebekah." (Verse 67). Believe me I learned that when someone trusts God and responds to God’s love, God richly blesses them.

I have told you about the great faith of Abraham and I saw Rebekah’s great faith. Their faith in God changed my life.

My story is a story of faith, Abraham believed God’s promise, Rebekah trusted God’s will for her life; Isaac trusted that Rebekah was the wife God had chosen for him; and I trusted the leading of my master’s God. Now it is up to you. What will your story be? Will you listen to God calling you? Will you trust Almighty God to intervene in your life? Will you accept your role as a servant and will you be a faithful servant? Will you put your master’s business before your personal pleasure? Will you depend upon the Lord to lead you every step of the way? Will you give praise to the Lord when He intervenes in your life?

I leave you with this challenge; Listen to the voice of God, Respond to His love, and Trust God even when you do not see where the trusting will lead you. AMEN

My name is Eliezer. I lived 4,000 years ago and I am Abraham’s eldest servant. Today I want to tell you my story.

One day my master, Abraham, called me in and told me he had a very important job for me. He wanted me to go to Mesopotamia to the city of Haran, the city of his brother Nahor and get a wife for his son, Isaac. He wanted me to take an oath that I would do this.

Wow! This was a heavy load my master was laying on me. That was quite a responsibility! He did not tell me who the girl was. My master just said, "You can count on God to lead you to the right girl. God has promised me that through Isaac I will have many children and Isaac needs a bride. I believe God."

I was very apprehensive so I asked my master, Abraham, "What if the woman will not come back with me?" Abraham said, "If this happens you will be free from your oath." But I believe God."

So I promised my master, Abraham, that I would do exactly what he wanted me to.

The next morning I loaded up the supplies on the camels for the long trip, along with presents for Isaac’s new bride. I took 10 camels with me since it was going to be a long hard trip.

I do not want you to miss the deep faith of my master, Abraham. My master trusted God entirely. The only instructions he gave to me were to get a wife for Isaac in Haran. I was not to get Isaac’s wife from Canaan. Abraham knew that God would lead me to pick the girl that God had already chosen. Abraham trusted me with great possessions. The journey was long and the road was dangerous. But Abraham knew God would protect me.

I made my way over the desert and when I arrived in Haran, I stopped at the city well and waited for the young women to come out and draw water.

My master’s great faith rubbed of on me. I saw how much he trusted God and how God honored that trust by blessing my master. I figured that if I prayed to the God of Abraham he would answer me as well.

I prayed to the God of my master, Abraham. I prayed that He would show me the girl that He had already chosen to be Isaac’s wife. I told him that He would have to show me which of these young girls was the one. You know, I would have just picked the prettiest one but I wanted to get the right one. So I decided that I would ask the young women to give me a drink of water. I prayed that if one of these young women was willing to give me a drink AND if this same young woman volunteered to water my camels after I had finished drinking then I would know that she was the girl that God had picked to be Isaac’s wife.

I had witnessed God answering my master’s prayers so I prayed like Abraham prayed.

You know, as soon as I had finished praying this beautiful girl came to the well to draw water. So, as soon as she filled her water jar I asked her for a drink of water. She lowered her water jar and let me drink. And as soon as I had finished drinking she said, "I will water your camels." Now this was no little job. Do you realize how much water 10 very thirsty camels can drink???

As she was watering my master’s camels I noticed that she was no ordinary girl. She was very polite and she was intelligent as well as being very beautiful! I learned that she was an eligible young lady named Rebekah and she was the granddaughter of Nahor, my master’s brother.

When I found this out, I was so excited!!! God had answered my first prayer! Since God had shown me the right girl I gave her the gold earrings and the gold bracelets. When Rebekah told me I could spend the night at her father’s house, I bowed down and praised the name of the Lord. Before I had seen the hand of the Almighty working in my master’s life but now I had witnessed the hand of the Almighty working in my life! This was very exciting … Before this incident it had been
